Slopes change the whole job

On a flat lot, water sits. On a Placitas hillside, it runs — and fast water is what destroys foothill driveways. It cuts under edges, carries off base, and dumps sand and rock across the surface. Paving a sloped drive that lasts is mostly about deciding, ahead of time, where every bit of runoff is going to go.

What goes into a Placitas driveway

  • Runoff plan. Where water enters from uphill, roofs and the road, and how it leaves: swales, rundowns, culverts and rock-armored outlets.
  • Arroyo crossings. Culverts sized for real storm flows, or reinforced dips where flows are big.
  • Thin lifts, heavy compaction. Base on grades is placed in thinner lifts so it doesn't creep downhill.
  • Edge support. Tapered, compacted edges and shoulders where the ground drops away.
  • Asphalt on the steep pitches. Gravel and millings tend to wash out on grades; hot-mix stays put.
  • Usable flat space. A parking pad or turnaround shaped at the top.

Replacing a failed driveway

If your existing drive has broken edges, washouts or sections that have slid, the base has usually failed. We remove the damaged pavement, rebuild the base with drainage, and repave — or, if the base is mostly sound, repair and overlay.

Common questions

Is asphalt slippery on a steep drive in winter?

Asphalt with good drainage sheds meltwater instead of letting it refreeze. On the steepest pitches, keep traction sand handy for icy mornings.

Why does my driveway edge keep breaking off?

On slopes, edges fail when they weren't compacted, have no shoulder support, or get undercut by runoff. A rebuild addresses all three.

Can you pave just the steep section?

Yes — asphalt on the steep part and chip seal on flatter stretches is a common, cost-effective combination.
