Paving on the mesa

Rio Rancho spreads across the high mesa northwest of Albuquerque, from neighborhoods near Corrales and the river up to the newer areas around Unser, Northern Boulevard and Paseo del Volcan. The ground is mostly sand, with arroyos cutting across the city and pockets of caliche here and there. It's good ground for drainage and tricky ground for pavement, because loose sand moves under load and washes out quickly when monsoon runoff finds an edge.

Add strong spring winds that pile sand against everything, plenty of high-altitude sun, and winter nights that freeze any water in a crack, and you get the problems we see most: broken driveway edges, washed-out shoulders, faded and raveling surfaces, and patches that didn't hold.

What Rio Rancho homeowners call us for

RV pads and side yards

Many Rio Rancho homes already have a concrete driveway. What they don't have is a solid place for the RV, trailer, boat or second truck. Paving the side yard or widening the driveway is one of our most common jobs here. RV pad paving in Rio Rancho.

Dirt and gravel driveways

On larger lots and in parts of the city where streets are still unpaved, driveways are often dirt or gravel. We convert them to asphalt, often reusing good gravel as base. How conversions work.

Worn asphalt

Older asphalt driveways and lots that have faded and cracked are good candidates for overlays or sealcoating, depending on the base.

Businesses and HOAs

Permits and the street

Paving on your own lot usually doesn't need a permit. Work at the street — a new driveway cut, a widened apron or anything in the right-of-way — may need one from the City of Rio Rancho. We'll flag it at the quote so there are no surprises.
