When asphalt makes more sense

  • Big areas. Long drives, turnarounds and acreage — the cost gap grows with every square foot.
  • RV pads and side yards. A heavy-duty asphalt pad is usually less expensive than a concrete pad of the same size, and it ties in cleanly beside an existing concrete driveway.
  • Dirt-road lots. Where sand keeps getting tracked on, asphalt is easier to sweep, patch and extend.
  • Speed. You can usually drive on it within a few days.

When concrete makes more sense

  • Short front driveways where the cost difference is small and you want minimal upkeep.
  • HOA rules that require concrete in front of the house.
  • Decorative finishes like stamped or colored concrete.

Sandy soil applies to both

Asphalt or concrete, the base is what fails first on Rio Rancho sand. Ask any contractor how deep they'll dig, what base they'll use and how they'll compact it. See paving on sand and caliche.

We pave asphalt, so take our view with that in mind — but if concrete is the better fit for your project, we'll tell you.

Common questions

Can asphalt go right next to my concrete driveway?

Yes. Asphalt widening and RV pads beside concrete are very common. A straight joint at a matched grade looks clean.

Does asphalt get soft in summer?

Properly compacted asphalt stays firm in normal summer heat. New asphalt can scuff if you turn the wheels while parked during its first hot weeks.

Which adds more value?

Both are seen as finished driveways. Condition matters more than material — a cracked concrete driveway or a faded asphalt one both look like a project to a buyer.
